kugrāmavāsaḥ kulahīnasevā | kubhojanaṃ krodhamukhī ca bhāryā | putraśca mūrkho vidhavā ca kanyā | vināgnimete pradahanti kāyam ||
Living in a bad village, serving a master of low family, poor food, a wife with an angry face, a foolish son and a widowed daughter: these burn the body without fire.
This reflects the prejudices of its time. A widowed daughter is never a burden or a source of shame, and a person's worth is never set by birth or family ('low family' is to be read as conduct, not caste). It must not be used to demean women, widows or anyone's family. If you feel you are a burden to your family, please talk to someone: Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
The verse names hardships that slowly drain a person: a bad environment, demeaning work, poor food, constant conflict at home. Its view of a widowed daughter as a burden belongs to its age; today she is family to be supported, not a sorrow to be borne.
A list, in upajāti metre, of things that were thought to wear a householder down from within. It reflects the social world of its time, including the hard lot of widowed daughters who had little support.
