6.14 Chanakya

kurājarājyena kutaḥ prajāsukhaṃ | kumitramitreṇa kuto'bhinirvṛtiḥ | kudāradāraiśca kuto gṛhe ratiḥ | kuśiṣyamadhyāpayataḥ kuto yaśaḥ ||

How can subjects be happy in a bad king's kingdom? What peace comes from a bad friend? What joy is there at home with a bad wife? What fame comes from teaching a bad pupil?

The line on a 'bad wife' reflects its time and must not be used to demean wives or women. A troubled marriage deserves care and help, not contempt; for abuse, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Poor leadership, false friends and unwilling learners drain the people around them. Choose with care whom you follow, befriend and invest your effort in.

The companion upajāti verse to 6.13, giving the reasons: nothing good comes from a bad ruler, friend, spouse or pupil.
