Chanakya Niti 7.17

7.17 Chanakya

atyantakopaḥ kaṭutā ca vāṇī | daridratā ca svajaneṣu vairam | nīcaprasaṅgaḥ kulahīnasevā | cihnāni dehe narakasthitānām ||

Extreme anger, harsh speech, poverty, enmity with one's own people, keeping low company and serving the ignoble: these are marks in the body of those who come from hell.

Poverty and 'low birth' are not marks of sin or worth; that part reflects the prejudices of its time. Worth comes from conduct, never from birth. This verse reflects the caste and purity ideas of its time and must never be used to rank, shun or exclude anyone.
