8.18 Chanakya

asaṃtuṣṭā dvijā naṣṭāḥ saṃtuṣṭāśca mahībhṛtaḥ | salajjā gaṇikā naṣṭāḥ nirlajjāśca kulāṅganāḥ ||

Discontented brahmins are ruined, and contented kings; a courtesan with modesty is ruined, and family women without it.

The underlying idea is that what is a virtue in one role can be a fault in another: a scholar should be content, a leader should keep striving. The remarks on women reflect their age.

A list of things ruined when their nature is reversed, using stereotypes of its time.
