9.11 Chanakya

prātardyūtaprasaṃgena madhyāhne strīprasaṃgataḥ | rātrau cauraprasaṃgena kālo gacchati dhīmatām ||

In the morning with talk of gambling, at midday with talk of a woman, and at night with talk of a thief: so the time of the wise passes.

The traditional reading is allegorical. Taken literally, this is not an endorsement of gambling or of objectifying women.

Meaning today and context

Read as intended, it says the wise fill their day with good stories and reflection rather than idle gossip. How you spend your free hours shapes your mind.

A riddle-like verse on how the wise pass their day; traditionally read as listening to the Mahabharata (the dice game) in the morning, the Ramayana (Sita) at midday and the Bhagavata (Krishna, the butter-thief) at night.
