arthādhītāśca yairvedāstathā śūdrānnabhojinaḥ | te dvijāḥ kiṃ kariṣyanti nirviṣā iva pannagāḥ ||
Those by whom the Vedas are studied for money, and who eat the food of śūdras: what can such twice-born do? They are like snakes without poison.
Worth comes from conduct, never from birth. This verse reflects the caste and purity ideas of its time and must never be used to rank, shun or exclude anyone. Sharing food with anyone is never polluting.
Meaning today and context
The lasting point is that learning pursued only for money loses its power. The idea that eating someone's food pollutes reflects caste rules that are rejected today.
A verse condemning brahmins who study the Vedas for money, framed in the caste rules of its time.
