1.1.10 Nachiketa to Yama

śāntasaṅkalpaḥ sumanā yathā syādvītamanyurgautamo mābhi mṛtyo | tvatprasṛṣṭaṃ mābhivadetpratīta etattrayāṇāṃ prathamaṃ varaṃ vṛṇe ||

That Gautama, my father, be calm in his thoughts and kindly in heart, his anger toward me gone, O Death, and that he greet me with recognition when you have sent me back: this I choose as the first of the three boons.

Meaning today and context

Sent away by his father in anger, the boy's first wish is for his father's peace and for reconciliation. Healing a broken relationship can matter more than being proved right.

Naciketas' first boon: not something for himself, but that his father, Gautama, be at peace, free of anger toward him, and welcome him back.
