The great-souled one, delighted, said to him: 'Here and now I give you one more boon. This fire shall be known by your own name. And take this chain of many forms.'

A sincere learner earns more than he asked for. The teacher's delight is itself a reward.

Yama, delighted with Naciketas, gives an extra boon: the fire will bear the boy's name, and he gives him a many-formed chain (sṛṅkā). The verse opens with a narrated line ('the great-souled one said') before Yama's words.
