Choose sons and grandsons who will live a hundred years, many cattle, elephants, gold and horses. Choose a vast stretch of land, and live yourself for as many autumns as you wish.
Meaning today and context
Life constantly offers us comfort, family success and security in place of the deeper questions. None of these is bad, but none answers what Naciketas asked.
Yama tempts Naciketas away from the question with everything a person could want: long-lived descendants, wealth, land, and as long a life as he wishes.
