1.1.27 Nachiketa to Yama

na vittena tarpaṇīyo manuṣyo lapsyāmahe vittamadrākṣma cettvā | jīviṣyāmo yāvadīśiṣyasi tvaṃ varastu me varaṇīyaḥ sa eva ||

A man is never satisfied by wealth. Shall we have wealth, now that we have seen you? We shall live as long as you hold sway. But the boon I want to choose is that one alone.

Meaning today and context

However much we earn, money does not settle the restlessness inside. Naciketas sees that wealth and time are borrowed, and turns to what money cannot buy.

Naciketas continues: wealth never satisfies; having met Death, wealth and life will come anyway as long as Yama allows. He wants only the boon he asked for.
