āśāpratīkṣe saṃgataṃ sūnṛtāṃ ca iṣṭāpūrte putrapaśūṃśca sarvān | etadvṛṅkte puruṣasyālpamedhaso yasyānaśnanvasati brāhmaṇo gṛhe ||
Hope and expectation, friendship and kind words, sacrifices and good works, sons and cattle, all of it: a brahmin who stays fasting in his house takes these away from the man of little sense.
'Brāhmaṇa' here means a learned, disciplined guest; worth lies in conduct and learning, never in birth. The verse is about honouring every guest, not ranking people.
Meaning today and context
Neglecting someone who depends on our care quietly undoes the good we think we have built. Hospitality and decency are not optional extras to a good life.
Yama's household continue: the householder who lets a learned guest stay unfed loses everything he has hoped and worked for.
