tisro rātrīryadavatsīrgṛhe me anaśnanbrahmannatithirnamasyaḥ | namaste'stu brahmansvasti me'stu tasmātprati trīnvarānvṛṇīṣva ||

Since you have stayed three nights in my house without eating, brahmin, a guest worthy of reverence, homage to you, brahmin, and may it be well with me. In return, choose three boons, one for each night.

Meaning today and context

Even Death apologises to a boy and makes amends. Owning a lapse and putting it right is a mark of greatness, not weakness.

Yama, returning, honours Naciketas and, to make amends for the three nights the boy waited unfed, offers him three boons.
