Katha Upanishad 1.2.5

1.2.5 Yama to Nachiketa

avidyāyāmantare vartamānāḥ svayaṃ dhīrāḥ paṇḍitaṃ manyamānāḥ | dandramyamāṇāḥ pariyanti mūḍhā andhenaiva nīyamānā yathāndhāḥ ||

Living in the midst of ignorance, wise in their own eyes and thinking themselves learned, the deluded wander round and round, staggering, like blind men led by one who is himself blind.

This is about our own false certainty and choosing guides wisely; it is not a licence to look down on anyone as ignorant.

Meaning today and context

The most dangerous ignorance is the kind that thinks it already knows. Choosing whom to follow matters: a guide who is blind to their own limits will lead others astray.

Yama describes the self-satisfied ignorant: living in ignorance yet thinking themselves wise and learned, they stumble about like the blind led by the blind.
