Katha Upanishad 2.1.4

2.1.4 Yama to Nachiketa

svapnāntaṃ jāgaritāntaṃ cobhau yenānupaśyati | mahāntaṃ vibhumātmānaṃ matvā dhīro na śocati ||

That by which one perceives both the dream state and the waking state: knowing it as the great, all-pervading Self, the wise person does not grieve.

If you are grieving, your sorrow is real and deserves care; this verse does not ask you to stop mourning. If grief feels unbearable, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Your dreams change and your waking days change, but the one who witnesses both stays the same. Resting in that steady awareness takes the sharpest edge off sorrow, though it does not mean we stop feeling.

Yama: knowing the great, all-pervading Self by which one sees both dream and waking, the wise person does not grieve.
