Katha Upanishad 2.3.12

2.3.12 Yama to Nachiketa

naiva vācā na manasā prāptuṃ śakyo na cakṣuṣā | astīti bruvato'nyatra kathaṃ tadupalabhyate ||

Not by speech, not by mind, not by sight can it be grasped. How can it be perceived other than by one who says 'it is'?

Meaning today and context

We can't capture the deepest reality in words or concepts, but we can affirm that it is. Starting from that simple affirmation, rather than proof, is how understanding begins.

Yama: the Self cannot be reached by speech, mind or eye; how can it be grasped except by saying 'it is'?
