2.3.6 Yama to Nachiketa

indriyāṇāṃ pṛthagbhāvamudayāstamayau ca yat | pṛthagutpadyamānānāṃ matvā dhīro na śocati ||

Knowing the separateness of the senses, and their rising and setting as they come into being apart from the Self, the wise person does not grieve.

Meaning today and context

Our senses, energy and abilities come and go; eyesight weakens, strength fades. Knowing that these are not the Self lets us meet ageing and loss without being crushed.

Yama: understanding that the senses are separate from the Self and arise and set on their own, the wise person does not grieve.
