śāstropaskṛta-śabda-sundara-giraḥ śiṣya-pradeyāgamā | vikhyātāḥ kavayo vasanti viṣaye yasya prabhornirdhanāḥ | taj-jāḍyaṃ vasudhādhipasya kavayastvarthaṃ vināpīśvarāḥ | kutsyāḥ syuḥ kuparīkṣakā hi maṇayo yairarghataḥ pātitāḥ ||

If in a ruler's land renowned poets live poor, whose speech is beautiful with words refined by learning and whose knowledge is worth handing on to students, that is the dullness of the king of the earth. Poets are masters even without wealth. It is the bad appraisers who deserve blame, who have lowered the price of gems.

Meaning today and context

When good work goes unrewarded, the failure is often in those who judge it, not in the work. Your worth isn't set by a poor appraiser, though a society that ignores its teachers and artists loses something.

Bhartrihari addresses a king in whose land fine poets live in poverty: the shame is the king's, not the poets'.
