Niti Shataka 1.16

1.16 Bhartrihari

harturyāti na gocaraṃ kimapi śaṃ puṣṇāti yatsarvadā'py | arthibhyaḥ pratipādyamānamaniśaṃ prāpnoti vṛddhiṃ parām | kalpānteṣvapi na prayāti nidhanaṃ vidyākhyamantardhanaṃ | yeṣāṃ tānprati mānamujjhata nṛpāḥ kastaiḥ saha spardhate ||

It never comes within sight of a thief; it always nourishes some kind of happiness; given away constantly to those who ask, it grows greatly; even at the end of the ages it does not perish. Kings, give up your pride before those who have this inner wealth called learning. Who can compete with them?

Meaning today and context

Knowledge is the one wealth nobody can steal and that grows when you share it. Invest in learning, and respect those who have it more than those who merely have money or power.

Bhartrihari praises learning as an inner wealth beyond the reach of thieves and time, and tells kings to drop their pride before its holders.
