Niti Shataka 1.33

1.33 Bhartrihari

kusuma-stavakasyeva | dvayī vṛttirmanasvinaḥ | mūrdhni vā sarva-lokasya | śīryate vana eva vā ||

Like a cluster of flowers, a high-minded person has only two ways: either to rest on the head of all the world, or to wither away in the forest itself.

Not an "either fame or nothing" rule; a quiet, ordinary life is fully worthwhile. If you feel you are withering or worthless, please talk to someone: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Some people would rather live quietly and unknown than gain a place by compromising themselves. The point is dignity, not all-or-nothing ambition.

An image of the high-minded person, likened to a cluster of flowers.
