Niti Shataka 1.36

1.36 Bhartrihari

varaṃ pakṣa-cchedaḥ samadamaghavan-mukta-kuliśa- | prahārairudgacchad-bahula-dahanodgāra-gurubhiḥ | tuṣārādreḥ sūnorahaha pitari kleśa-vivaśe | na cāsau sampātaḥ payasi payasāṃ patyurucitaḥ ||

Better to have had his wings cut off by the blows of the thunderbolt hurled by proud Indra, heavy with bursts of rising, abundant flame, than that the son of the snowy mountain, ah, while his father was overwhelmed with suffering, should have taken that plunge into the waters of the lord of waters. It was not fitting.

"Better to be maimed than dishonoured" is poetic praise of loyalty, not advice to accept injury. Getting yourself out of danger or abuse is never shameful; for danger call 112, and if guilt or shame weighs on you, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Running to safety while those who depend on you are suffering can cost more than the harm you avoid. Standing by family in their trouble matters.

The myth of Mainaka, son of the Himalaya, who escaped Indra's thunderbolt (which cut off the mountains' wings) by hiding in the ocean while his father suffered. Bhartrihari says losing his wings would have been better than that.
