Let birth sink to the underworld, and let all the virtues go lower still; let good conduct fall off a cliff and noble family burn in the fire; let a thunderbolt strike valour, our enemy. Let us have wealth alone, without which all these virtues are worth no more than a blade of grass.
Satire on the money-minded view, not advice: it does not say character, family or courage are worthless. Not financial advice.

This is satire: it shows how the world often talks once money becomes the only measure. Seeing that attitude clearly, in others or in ourselves, helps us not to give up our character for it.
Bhartrihari opens his verses on wealth by voicing, in mock seriousness, the attitude of the money-minded: let every other good go, so long as there is money.
