Niti Shataka 1.41

1.41 Bhartrihari

yasyāsti vittaṃ sa naraḥ kulīnaḥ | sa paṇḍitaḥ sa śrutavānguṇajñaḥ | sa eva vaktā sa ca darśanīyaḥ | sarve guṇāḥ kāñcanamāśrayanti ||

Whoever has money is of good family; he is learned, well-read, a judge of merit; he is the speaker worth hearing, and he is handsome. All virtues take shelter in gold.

Meaning today and context

People often mistake money for merit and listen to the rich as if they were wise. Knowing this helps us judge people, and ourselves, by what they actually are.

Bhartrihari, ironically, lists the virtues society credits to anyone with money.
