Niti Shataka 1.5

1.5 Bhartrihari

labheta sikatāsu tailamapi yatnataḥ pīḍayan | pibecca mṛga-tṛṣṇikāsu salilaṃ pipāsārditaḥ | kadācidapi paryaṭanśaśa-viṣāṇamāsādayet | na tu pratiniviṣṭa-mūrkha-jana-cittamārādhayet ||

Pressing hard enough, one might get oil even from sand; tormented by thirst, one might drink water from a mirage; wandering far, one might somewhere find a hare's horn; but one cannot win over the mind of a stubborn fool.

Not a licence to look down on anyone; it is about knowing where persuasion can work.

Meaning today and context

Trying to please someone who has closed their mind is like squeezing sand for oil. Put that effort into people and work where it can bear fruit.

A second list of impossibilities, continuing the theme of the stubborn fool.
