Niti Shataka 1.56

1.56 Bhartrihari

śaśī divasa-dhūsaro galita-yauvanā kāminī | saro vigata-vārijaṃ mukhamanakṣaraṃ svākṛteḥ | prabhurdhana-parāyaṇaḥ satata-durgataḥ sajjano | nṛpāṅgaṇa-gataḥ khalo manasi sapta śalyāni me ||

The moon grey in daylight, a beloved whose youth has passed, a lake bare of lotuses, a handsome face with no learning behind it, a master devoted only to money, a good man always in hardship, and a wicked man at the king's court: these seven are thorns in my mind.

The image of a woman whose youth has passed is a poetic convention of its time; ageing takes nothing from anyone's worth.

Meaning today and context

What truly troubles a thoughtful person is good going unrewarded and harm being rewarded: decent people struggling, greedy bosses, the wrong people in power. It is natural to feel that pain.

Bhartrihari lists seven sights that pain him like thorns lodged in the mind; most are images of something good gone to waste or put in the wrong place.
