Niti Shataka 1.58

1.58 Bhartrihari

maunānmūkaḥ pravacana-paṭurvātulo jalpako vā | dhṛṣṭaḥ pārśve vasati ca sadā dūrataścāpragalbhaḥ | kṣāntyā bhīruryadi na sahate prāyaśo nābhijātaḥ | sevādharmaḥ parama-gahano yogināmapyagamyaḥ ||

If silent, he is called dumb; if good at speaking, a windbag and a chatterer; if he stays close, impudent; if he keeps his distance, timid; if patient, a coward; if he does not put up with things, mostly ill-bred. The duty of service is deeply difficult, beyond reach even of yogis.

Meaning today and context

In many jobs you will be criticised whatever you do: too quiet, too talkative, too eager, too distant. Knowing this is how service works helps you stop taking every remark to heart and do your work steadily.

Bhartrihari describes how impossible it is to please a master when in service: every way of behaving is held against the servant.
