Niti Shataka 1.60

1.60 Bhartrihari

ārambha-gurvī kṣayiṇī krameṇa | laghvī purā vṛddhimatī ca paścāt | dinasya pūrvārdha-parārdha-bhinnā | chāyeva maitrī khala-saj-janānām ||

Great at the start and dwindling little by little; small at first and growing afterwards: like the shadow of the first and second halves of the day is the friendship of the wicked and of the good.

Meaning today and context

Be wary of friendships that start with great warmth and flattery; they often fade. Real friendships usually start modestly and deepen with time.

Bhartrihari compares the friendship of the wicked and of the good to the shadow in the morning and in the afternoon.
