Niti Shataka 1.69

1.69 Bhartrihari

eko devaḥ keśavo vā śivo vā | hyekaṃ mitraṃ bhūpatirvā yatirvā | eko vāsaḥ pattane vā vane vā | hyekā bhāryā sundarī vā darī vā ||

One god: Keśava or Śiva. One friend: a king or an ascetic. One dwelling: in a city or in a forest. One wife: a beautiful woman, or a cave.

The 'cave' stands for renunciation; it is not advice to leave family or responsibilities. The pairing of a wife with a cave is wordplay of its time and is not a judgement on women.

Meaning today and context

Wholehearted commitment brings depth: choose your path, your loyalties and your relationship, and stay with them instead of being torn between many.

Bhartrihari praises single-minded commitment: one god, one friend, one home, one wife, with a pun that pairs 'a beautiful woman' with 'a cave', i.e. either household life or the life of a renunciant.
