Niti Shataka 1.71

1.71 Bhartrihari

bhavanti namrāstaravaḥ phalodgamair | navāmbubhirdūravilambino ghanāḥ | anuddhatāḥ sat-puruṣāḥ samṛddhibhiḥ | svabhāva eṣa paropakāriṇām ||

Trees bend low as their fruit appears; clouds hang low, heavy with new water; good people do not grow haughty with prosperity. This is the very nature of those who do good to others.

Meaning today and context

The more you have to give, the humbler you can afford to be. Success that makes you arrogant has missed its purpose; success that makes you more useful to others has found it.

Bhartrihari uses the images of fruit-laden trees and rain clouds to show that those who help others become humbler as they gain.
