Niti Shataka 1.72

1.72 Bhartrihari

śrotraṃ śrutenaiva na kuṇḍalena | dānena pāṇirna tu kaṅkaṇena | vibhāti kāyaḥ karuṇā-parāṇāṃ | paropakārairna tu candanena ||

The ear shines through learning heard, not through an earring; the hand through giving, not through a bracelet; and the body of the compassionate shines through helping others, not through sandalwood paste.

Meaning today and context

What makes a person beautiful is what they listen to, what they give and how they help, not what they wear. Spend at least as much care on these as on appearance.

Bhartrihari says the true ornaments of the body are learning, giving and service, not jewellery or perfume.
