Niti Shataka 1.77

1.77 Bhartrihari

itaḥ svapiti keśavaḥ kulamitastadīya-dviṣām | itaśca śaraṇārthināṃ śikhariṇāṃ gaṇāḥ śerate | ito'pi baḍavānalaḥ saha samasta-saṃvartakaiḥ | aho vitatamūrjitaṃ bhara-sahaṃ sindhorvapuḥ ||

Here sleeps Keshava; here, the race of his enemies; here lie the hosts of mountains that came seeking refuge; here too is the submarine fire with all the clouds of the world's end. Ah, how vast, how mighty, how able to bear its load is the body of the ocean!

Meaning today and context

A large heart can hold friends and opponents, those who come for shelter and even dangerous forces, without being torn apart. Greatness is the capacity to bear and contain.

Bhartrihari marvels at the ocean, which in Puranic imagery holds Vishnu, his demon enemies, the mountains that fled there for refuge, and the undersea fire, as an image of a great-hearted person who bears everything.
