kiṃ tena hema-giriṇā rajatādriṇā vā | yatrāśritāśca taravastaravasta eva | manyāmahe malayameva yad-āśrayeṇa | kaṅkola-nimba-kaṭujā api candanāḥ syuḥ ||

What use is the golden mountain, or the silver one, where the trees that grow on them stay just trees? We prize the Malaya mountain, by whose shelter even the kankola, the neem and the kutaja become sandalwood.

Meaning today and context

A person's worth is not in their wealth or status but in what they do for those around them. Seek, and try to be, the kind of company that makes others better.

Bhartrihari contrasts the gold and silver mountains of legend with the Malaya mountain, whose sandalwood scent turns even ordinary trees near it fragrant.
