nindantu nīti-nipuṇā yadi vā stuvantu | lakṣmīḥ samāviśatu gacchatu vā yatheṣṭham | adyaiva vā maraṇamastu yugāntare vā | nyāyyātpathaḥ pravicalanti padaṃ na dhīrāḥ ||
Let the clever and worldly-wise blame them or praise them; let fortune come or go as she pleases; let death come today or after an age: the steadfast do not step even one foot off the path of what is right.
The resolve is to keep to what is right, not to stubbornness or ignoring good advice. 'Let death come' expresses firmness, never a wish to die; if you feel that way, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
Praise, criticism, gain and loss will keep changing. What you can keep steady is your own commitment to doing what is right, whatever people say and whatever it costs.
One of the most famous verses of the Niti Shataka: the steadfast do not leave the right path whatever the cost.
