Niti Shataka 1.85

1.85 Bhartrihari

bhagnāśasya karaṇḍa-piṇḍita-tanormlānendriyasya kṣudhā | kṛtvākhurvivaraṃ svayaṃ nipatito naktaṃ mukhe bhoginaḥ | tṛptastat-piśitena satvaramasau tenaiva yātaḥ pathā | lokāḥ paśyata daivameva hi nṛṇāṃ vṛddhau kṣaye kāraṇam ||

A snake had lost all hope, its body coiled up in a basket, its senses failing with hunger. At night a rat, having gnawed a hole by itself, fell straight into the snake's mouth. Fed on its flesh, the snake quickly escaped by that same opening. See, people: it is fate alone that causes the rise and fall of human beings.

Bhartrihari also says effort is our best friend (NS 1.86) and that one should act after careful thought (NS 1.89). This verse on fate is not a reason to give up trying; if you feel hopeless, please talk to someone, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Life can turn when we least expect it; the hopeless can be rescued and the confident can fall. It is a reason for humility in good times and for not giving up hope in bad ones.

Bhartrihari tells a short fable of a starving snake shut in a basket and a rat that gnaws its way in, to show how fortune can turn in an instant.
