Niti Shataka 1.86

1.86 Bhartrihari

ālasyaṃ hi manuṣyāṇāṃ | śarīrastho mahānripuḥ | nāstyudyama-samo bandhuḥ | kurvāṇo nāvasīdati ||

Laziness is a person's great enemy, living within their own body. There is no friend equal to effort; one who keeps working does not sink.

If constant tiredness or lack of motivation lasts for weeks, it can be depression or a health problem, not laziness; please see a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The enemy that holds us back is often inside: putting things off, comfort, inertia. Steady effort is the friend that does not abandon us.

A famous maxim in the Niti Shataka's group of verses weighing effort against fate.
