kṛmi-kula-citaṃ lālā-klinnaṃ vigandhi-jugupsitaṃ | nirupama-rasaṃ prītyā khādannarāsthi nirāmiṣam | surapatimapi śvā pārśvasthaṃ vilokya na śaṅkate | na hi gaṇayati kṣudro jantuḥ parigraha-phalgutām ||

Chewing with relish a human bone, crawling with worms, wet with slobber, foul-smelling, disgusting and without any meat, as if it had matchless flavour, a dog does not hesitate even when it sees the lord of the gods standing beside it. A petty creature does not reckon how worthless its possession is.

Meaning today and context

We can cling so hard to small things, a grudge, a habit, a petty gain, that we stop seeing anything better right in front of us. It is worth asking what bone we are gnawing.

An image of pettiness: a dog gnawing a filthy bone is too absorbed to notice even the king of the gods beside it.
