Niti Shataka 1.92

1.92 Bhartrihari

sṛjati tāvadaśeṣa-guṇākaraṃ | puruṣa-ratnamalaṅkaraṇaṃ bhuvaḥ | tadapi tat-kṣaṇa-bhaṅgi karoti ced | ahaha kaṣṭamapaṇḍitatā vidheḥ ||

The Creator first makes a jewel of a man, a mine of every virtue, an ornament of the earth, and then makes him perish in an instant. Alas, what a pity, the Creator's want of wisdom!

For someone grieving, acknowledge the loss first; this verse voices the pain, it does not explain it away. If grief feels unbearable, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When a good and gifted person dies young or is suddenly lost, it feels senseless, and even the classics admit it. Naming that pain honestly is part of grieving.

Bhartrihari laments that fate creates an outstanding person and then lets them perish in a moment.
