Niti Shataka 1.94

1.94 Bhartrihari

namasyāmo devānnanu hatavidheste'pi vaśagā | vidhirvandyaḥ so'pi pratiniyata-karmaika-phaladaḥ | phalaṃ karmāyattaṃ yadi kimamaraiḥ kiṃ ca vidhinā | namastat-karmabhyo vidhirapi na yebhyaḥ prabhavati ||

We bow to the gods, but they too are under the power of cruel fate. Then fate deserves worship, but fate too only gives the fixed fruit of each person's actions. If the fruit depends on action, what are the gods for, and what is fate? Salutation to those actions, over which even fate has no power!

Meaning today and context

In the end what shapes our life is what we do. Rather than waiting on luck or praying for shortcuts, take responsibility for your actions; they are what bear fruit.

Bhartrihari reasons step by step from gods, to fate, to one's own actions, and ends by bowing to action (karma) itself.
