brahmā yena kulālavanniyamito brahmāṇḍa-bhāṇḍodare | viṣṇuryena daśāvatāra-gahane kṣipto mahā-saṅkaṭe | rudro yena kapāla-pāṇi-puṭake bhikṣāṭanaṃ kāritaḥ | sūryo bhrāmyati nityameva gagane tasmai namaḥ karmaṇe ||
Salutation to that karma by which Brahma was set to work like a potter inside the pot of the universe; by which Vishnu was thrown into the great trouble and tangle of ten incarnations; by which Rudra was made to wander begging with a skull in his hand; and by which the Sun wanders the sky every day.
Meaning today and context
No one, however great, is outside the chain of action and consequence. It is humbling and also steadying: everyone has their work to do.
Bhartrihari bows to karma, showing that even the great gods of the Puranas are bound by it.
