Prashna Upanishad 1.13

1.13 Pippalada to Kabandhi Katyayana

ahorātro vai prajāpatiḥ | tasyāhareva prāṇo rātrireva rayiḥ | prāṇaṃ vā ete praskandanti ye divā ratyā saṃyujyante | brahmacaryameva tadyadrātrau ratyā saṃyujyante ||

"Day-and-night is Prajāpati. Its day is life (prāṇa), its night matter (rayi). Those who join in love by day spill away their life. That they join in love by night is (counted as) chastity."

This is an ancient rule of restraint, reflecting its time. It is not medical or sexual-health advice and should never be used to shame anyone about their body or their relationship.

Meaning today and context

The point is not shame about intimacy but that a married life lived with measure and timing is itself a form of discipline. Self-restraint is not only for monks.

Applied to the day: day is prāṇa, night is rayi. Pippalāda gives a traditional rule of restraint: intimacy by day wastes one's vitality, while intimacy at night (in due measure) counts as brahmacarya.
