1.3 Kabandhi Katyayana to Pippalada

atha kabandhī kātyāyana upetya papraccha | bhagavankuto ha vā imāḥ prajāḥ prajāyanta iti ||

Then Kabandhī Kātyāyana came to him and asked: "Sir, from where are these creatures born?"

Meaning today and context

The oldest human question, where do we come from, is asked here simply and directly. It is a good question to ask a teacher, not a foolish one.

After the year, the first student, Kabandhī Kātyāyana, asks the first question: where do living beings come from?
