"You are pure by nature (needing no rite), prāṇa, the one seer (the sacred fire), eater of all, the true lord of all that is. We are the givers of what you eat; you, Mātariśvan (wind), are our father."
Meaning today and context
We feed our life, but our life is not ours to command; it is closer to a parent who sustains us. That shift, from owner to child, can make us gentler with ourselves.
Pippalāda's answer to Bhārgava continues: a hymn of praise to prāṇa, sung by the senses after they recognise it as their support. Prāṇa is pure in itself, the eater of all and our father; we only offer it what it eats.
