Prashna Upanishad 2.4

2.4 Pippalada to Bhargava Vaidarbhi

so'bhimānādūrdhvamutkramata iva | tasminnutkrāmatyathetare sarva evotkrāmante | tasmiṃśca pratiṣṭhamāne sarva eva prātiṣṭhante | tadyathā makṣikā madhukararājānamutkrāmantaṃ sarvā evotkrāmante | tasmiṃśca pratiṣṭhamāne sarvā eva prātiṣṭhante | evaṃ vāṅmanaścakṣuḥśrotraṃ ca | te prītāḥ prāṇaṃ stunvanti ||

Out of pride he rose up as if to leave. As he began to leave, all the others began to leave too; as he settled, they all settled. Just as all the bees rise when the king-bee rises and settle when it settles, so did speech, mind, eye and ear. Pleased, they praised prāṇa.

This describes prāṇa in the Upanishad's own terms. It is not a breathing exercise, not anatomy, and not medical advice; for any health concern, see a doctor.

Meaning today and context

Proof often works where argument fails. The senses learn humility only when they feel what happens without their real support. It is wiser to recognise what holds our life together before we are shown by losing it.

The story's turning point: prāṇa begins to leave, and all the senses are pulled out with it, like bees following their queen; humbled, they praise prāṇa.
