Prashna Upanishad 3.5

3.5 Pippalada to Kausalya Ashvalayana

pāyūpasthe'pānam | cakṣuḥśrotre mukhanāsikābhyāṃ prāṇaḥ svayaṃ pratiṣṭhate | madhye tu samānaḥ | eṣa hyetaddhutamannaṃ samaṃ nayati | tasmādetāḥ saptārciṣo bhavanti ||

"Apāna is in the organs of excretion and generation. Prāṇa itself dwells in the eye and ear, and in the mouth and nose. In the middle is samāna, for it distributes evenly the food offered (as into a fire). From it arise the seven flames."

This describes prāṇa in the Upanishad's own terms. It is not a breathing exercise, not anatomy, and not medical advice; for any health concern, see a doctor.

Meaning today and context

Eating is pictured as an offering into an inner fire, and the body as a place of worship. That view invites us to eat with care and gratitude.

Pippalāda describes the places of the breaths: apāna below, prāṇa in eye, ear, mouth and nose, samāna in the middle distributing food.
