"The sun is the outer prāṇa; it rises, favouring the prāṇa in the eye. The deity in the earth supports a person's apāna. The space between is samāna. Air is vyāna."
This describes prāṇa in the Upanishad's own terms. It is not a breathing exercise, not anatomy, and not medical advice; for any health concern, see a doctor.
Meaning today and context
The powers inside us mirror the powers outside us: sight needs sunlight, standing needs the earth. We are woven into the world, not set apart from it.
Pippalāda links the inner breaths to the outer world: the sun is the outer prāṇa, earth's deity supports apāna, space is samāna, and air is vyāna.
