5.5 Pippalada to Satyakama Shaibya

"But one who meditates on the supreme Person with this very syllable Om, of three measures, becomes one with the light, the sun. As a snake is freed from its skin, so he is freed from sin. He is led up by the Sāman chants to the world of Brahman. From this mass of living beings he sees the Person, higher than the high, who dwells in the city (of the body). On this there are two verses:"

Meditation on Om is a spiritual practice, best learned from a qualified teacher. It is not a medical treatment and does not replace care for physical or mental health.

Meaning today and context

Old mistakes and burdens can fall away like a snake's old skin. Full, wholehearted practice is described as leading to seeing the one who lives in every body, including our own.

Pippalāda: one who meditates on the supreme Person through the full three-measure Om is freed from sin as a snake from its old skin and sees the Person who dwells in every body; two verses follow.
