Prashna Upanishad 6.8

6.8 The six students to Pippalada

te tamarcayantastvaṃ hi naḥ pitā yo'smākamavidyāyāḥ paraṃ pāraṃ tārayasīti namaḥ | paramaṛṣibhyo namaḥ paramaṛṣibhyaḥ ||

Honouring him, they said: "You are our father, who carry us across to the far shore beyond ignorance." Salutations to the supreme seers! Salutations to the supreme seers!

Meaning today and context

A real teacher is like a parent who helps us cross from not-knowing to knowing. Gratitude to those who taught us is part of learning itself.

The six students honour Pippalāda as their father, who has carried them across ignorance; the Upanishad ends with salutations to the great seers.
