Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.11

2.11 Upanishadic seer

nīhāradhūmārkānalānilānāṃ khadyotavidyutsphaṭikāśaśīnām | etāni rūpāṇi puraḥsarāṇi brahmaṇyabhivyaktikarāṇi yoge ||

Mist, smoke, sun, fire, wind, fireflies, lightning, crystal, moon: these forms come first in yoga and lead to the manifestation of Brahman.

These signs are described as the text's own markers, not goals to chase or proof of anything. Intense meditation can bring up unsettling experiences; people with trauma, psychosis or severe depression should practise only with guidance. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The text says meditation may bring passing inner images and lights. They are signs along the way, not the goal; the point is what lies beyond them.

Shvetashvatara lists the appearances that come first in yoga and herald the manifestation of Brahman.
