yuktvāya manasā devānsuvaryato dhiyā divaṃ | bṛhajjyotiḥ kariṣyataḥ savitā prasuvāti tān ||
Having yoked with the mind the gods who go toward heaven, and with thought the sky, may Savitṛ impel them, who will make a great light.
Meaning today and context
The powers within us, our senses and faculties, can be turned upward toward clarity instead of being pulled outward. Prayer here is asking for that inner turning.
The second chapter of the Upanishad, taught by the sage Shvetashvatara, opens with Vedic verses to Savitṛ, the impelling sun god, asking him to yoke the mind for meditation. Savitṛ is asked to yoke the senses (the 'gods') with mind and thought and send them toward the great light.
