Shvetashvatara Upanishad 2.9

2.9 Upanishadic seer

prāṇānprapīḍyeha sa yuktaceṣṭaḥ kṣīne prāṇe nāsikayocchvasīta | duṣṭāśvayuktamiva vāhamenaṃ vidvānmano dhārayetāpramattaḥ ||

Restraining the breaths here and with movements controlled, when the breath has grown quiet, one should breathe out through the nostrils. As a driver holds a chariot yoked to unruly horses, the wise person should hold the mind, without carelessness.

Posture and breath practice should be learned from a qualified teacher. Never hold the breath forcibly; stop if there is pain, dizziness or breathlessness, and consult a doctor first for heart, blood-pressure or breathing conditions or in pregnancy. This is not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

The mind behaves like untrained horses; it is held not by force but by steady, alert attention. Slowing the breath gently is one aid to that.

Shvetashvatara describes regulating the breath and holding the mind steady, comparing the mind to a chariot yoked to unruly horses.
