Shvetashvatara Upanishad 3.8

3.8 Upanishadic seer

vedāhametaṃ puruṣaṃ mahāntamādityavarṇaṃ tamasaḥ parastāt | tameva viditvāti mṛtyumeti nānyaḥ panthā vidyate'yanāya ||

I know this great Person, radiant as the sun, beyond darkness. Only by knowing him does one pass beyond death; there is no other path to go.

This verse is about knowing the deathless Self, not about death as a way out. If you are grieving or having thoughts of ending your life, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The fear of death is met not by avoiding it but by knowing what in us is beyond it. The sage speaks as one who has seen, not as one repeating hearsay.

In the third chapter Shvetashvatara praises the one Lord, Rudra (Śiva), as ruler of the worlds. Here the sage speaks from his own knowing: he has known the great Person beyond darkness, and only by knowing him does one go beyond death.
